I bought my HP Pavilion about a year and a half ago. My wonderful Toshiba had finally died and I read all the reviews and took all the "which laptop is right for me?" quizes and decided this laptop had it all for such a great price...PPHHHOOOEEYYY. This laptop has 2 design flaws, The plug in cord is next to the disc drive so that unless you turn your computer a certain way, every time you open the disc drive or close it, your electrical cord is in the way. That is not nearly so annoying as the little slidy sensor on the right of the mouse pad. It senses the heat or light change from your hand hovering over as you type and jumps the mouse to different positions on the page. This is VERY frustrating, especially if you have typed quite a bit before checking your work. You can disable the mouse while typing, but then when you DO want to move your cursor, you have to turn it back on.The battery has never lasted more than 1.5 hours and now lasts 5 minutes. Since circuit city went under, I am supposed to MAIL it in and wait 4-6 weeks for my replacement. Also, I do not like VISTA at all, it is annoying, non-compaptible and difficult to work with. Another problem with this computer is that I have to reset the dispay settings every day...Today I did what I never thought I would do, I bought a MAC...will let you all know, but i have always "been a PC" uptil now.

This is what i encountered. I bought it in a store not amazon. First the wireless modem stopped working. Then the whole thing just stopped working. The store sent it to HP and they replaced it in a week or so. So I was like ok (probably bc I was paying it on credit, with insurance on it). The new one that I have is very slow, dunno why, cleaned it, anti virus, spyware, spyware, registry, scandisk, defrag, everything done and still. And the mouse just goes crazy all over the place. Another thing it just overheats alot! My wife has a Dell and I call it "Rambo" its being thru some much stuff, its missing chunks of it, even went on a deployment to Iraq and is still good! No more HP for me (dissapointed, I thought HP was the top of the line)

I have to say, it was really a combination of HP and Vista that did it. But this past week, my laptop adapter started smoking and caught fire. Yes...it actually caught fire. Thank goodness I was home, because I might not have had a home to come back to. So I call HP with my tale of woe, like...for the typical American, this is lawsuit territory, and I'm told I'll be overnighted an adapter. The next day it doesn't come, so I call back to ask WTF, since I have no way of charging a laptop I need to use. I'm then told they don't overnight parts, that it hasn't even been shipped out. OK, so now I have no way to use my laptop since the battery is completely dead. Having owned an IBM, this is completely absurd, since IBM went out of their way to get parts next day.
Now, for why the thing caught fire...the power plug is located on the right side of the computer. The geniuses at HP give you a straight adapter, which means if your power source is on the left side of your laptop, the cord will constantly be bent. Straight adapters are supposed to be used when the power plug is located on the back of a laptop. L adapters are more suitable for side plugs. I was told they'd be shipping out an L adapter to prevent this from occurring again..lie #2. At this point, I'm completely disgusted with their customer service.
Also, I've also had a problem with the mouse pad. The mouse seems to do whatever it wants...there's no way you could do precision work on this laptop, because the mouse jumps and clicks whatever it feels like. After several driver updates, it still didn't fix itself, so I have to send it in to HP.
All in all, this laptop experience has been a miserable one for me. My last HP was great, which is why I bought another but I think now I'll take the plunge into Apple for my next laptop.

I have had this laptop now for almost a year. I haven't had any of the major issues that others are complaining about. I have had a few minor issues though like the touchpad issue. I used the touchpad when I first received the laptop, but I hate touchpads anyways because I'm too heavy handed and I always end up clicking things that I don't intend to so I just turned it off and bought a wireless mouse.
I also don't like the fact that the battery connector is on the same side that I have to use my mouse on because it is an annoyance as pointed out by another reviewer. I would upgrade the battery also.
The laptop does get EXTREMELY hot though. I haven't had any issues related to it yet, but it scares me how hot it gets!
I have absolutely no problems with the wireless card. My laptop is NEVER disconnected from the internet unless I disconnect.
I love the memory card slot on the side which means I don't have to carry around any extra USB cords for my digital camera.
The webcam is great. I had some problems with the pc not being able to find it a few times when I first got the laptop and it took a few reboots to get it to recognize the thing. After some driver updates, it works fine now and the quality is excellent.
This laptop is loaded with great features and products. The only thing that I recommend would be to DEFINITELY upgrade your memory. After almost a year using this laptop, I am finally going to give in and upgrade as the pc is not running as fast as it did when I first got it, but I think that is due to me loading all of my crap on the laptop that runs 24/7/365!
All in all, great pc for the price I paid. It's so lightweight and I take it everywhere I go! I haven't come across any issues to make me want to downgrade the rating, so I have to give it 5 stars based off my experiences with it.

I bought this computer 8 months ago and downgraded it from vista to XP. Everything is perfect so far, but keep in mind that this is not a very powerful computer, so if you want it to play graphically heavy games or stuff like that this is not a good choice for you. perfect to play movies, music, and to work on it (ms office, etc.) and to browse over the internet as well.
If you want to keep vista it may be a good idea to buy another 1gb ram memory, for better performance, but if you downgrade it to XP like me it performs much better just as it is, however, HP doesn't provide support for this downgrades, so it might be a little bit difficult if you are not experienced.
AS IT COMES I'D GIVE IT 4 STARS, BUT IF YOU DOWNGRADE IT IT'S JUST GREAT 5/5
